What is an Auto Title?

If you own and operate your vehicle within Ohio, you must have a physical Ohio certificate of title. While the Deputy Registrar (BMV) has the responsibility to issue license plates and driver’s licenses, the Clerk of Courts has the legal responsibility to store, transfer, and process auto titles.

When do I need to get an Auto Title?

The dealership usually handles the title and registration of a new vehicle for the customer, but you may need to stop in our office for one of the following reasons:

  • To process title work given to you by the dealership
  • When buying or selling a used vehicle
  • To transfer ownership of a vehicle to another person (including gifting or inheriting)
  • When your auto title is lost or stolen

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Application for Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (you can find all forms here)
  • Proper identification such as your picture ID or driver’s license
  • Current vehicle registration

How much is it to get an Auto Title?

There is a $15 fee the Certificate of Title of a  Duplicate Title. You can review all fees here.
